I always hated traditional butter dishes, especially with little kids of my own and being a butter loving family. As a result, I put my butter in a regular hot cocoa or coffee mug with the knife sticking in it, so it had a place to stay. I did this for years. The only problem, the knife would still get really messy as the butter made its way from the rim of the mug to the handle of the knife.
One day a friend saw my butter, sitting in a mug, on my microwave and said, Katie- that is a genius idea- you should do something with that. I thought, “But its just butter, in a mug -Anyone can do that and they should!” and didn’t give it much thought after that.
Strangely, about 6 months later, in the middle of the night one night, I pictured the knife holder, the pour spout, the handle, all of it… and I called my sister in law, who is a very talented potter and had her work up my first prototypes.
We tested them out at our thanksgiving dinner with 35 people attending. 3 days of family passing, scraping, refilling the butter filled mugs and not one hiccup. Everyone wanted to have one made for their houses as soon as they could get one.
And that’s how The Butter Mug was born!

Originally crafted by a talented ceramic artisan, this patent-pending product owes its heart and soul to craftsmanship, and we want to keep that alive.
